2027 Chevrolet Equinox vs. 2027 GMC Terrain: Comparing Two Compact SUVs

The Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain share a similar footprint and a common focus on everyday practicality, but the two compact SUVs are designed to appeal to different buyers.

The Equinox emphasizes versatility, value and a choice between three distinct personalities. The Terrain takes a more premium approach, with truck-inspired GMC styling, a larger standard centre display and AT4 and Denali models that move in very different directions.

Complete Canadian specifications for the 2027 GMC Terrain have not yet been confirmed. Current next-generation Terrain specifications are used here because the model is expected to remain substantially similar.

Both Use a 1.5L Turbo Engine

Mechanically, the two SUVs begin from a similar place. Both use a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 175 hp.

The Terrain develops 203 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 680 kg, or 1,500 lb, while the Equinox also provides a maximum towing capacity of 680 kg when properly equipped.

For both vehicles, the emphasis is less on outright performance than on providing useful everyday power in a compact SUV that can handle commuting, family use and light recreational towing.

The Equinox Gives Buyers Three Different Personalities

The Equinox lineup includes LT, RS and ACTIV models.

The LT provides the core Equinox formula with features including heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 11-inch Driver Information Centre.

The RS changes the presentation with black exterior detailing, its own grille and front fascia, a flat-bottom steering wheel and available larger wheels.

The ACTIV takes another direction entirely. It uses all-terrain tires, a uniquely tuned suspension and exterior details designed to give the Equinox a more adventurous appearance.

Terrain Takes a More Premium Approach

The Terrain follows a slightly different formula. Elevation serves as the foundation of the range, while AT4 and Denali create two distinct directions above it.

The AT4 adds:

  • Standard AWD;
  • A selectable Terrain Mode;
  • Increased ride height;
  • Metal underbody protection;
  • Red front recovery hooks;
  • 17-inch all-terrain tires;
  • Hill Descent Control.

The Denali focuses instead on comfort and refinement, with heated outboard front and rear seats, unique exterior details, standard AWD and specialized Smart Frequency Dampers designed to improve ride comfort.

Equinox ACTIV is adventure-themed, while Terrain AT4 adds more dedicated off-road equipment. Equinox RS focuses on sportier styling, whereas Terrain Denali moves more decisively toward premium appointments.

Terrain Has the Larger Standard Centre Screen

One of the clearest interior differences is display size.

Every Terrain in the current next-generation lineup uses a 15-inch Premium GMC Infotainment System paired with an 11-inch Driver Information Centre. The display can show as many as three applications simultaneously, making it easier to keep navigation and other vehicle information visible at the same time.

The Equinox uses an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 11-inch Driver Information Centre. It also offers Google built-in compatibility, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with available wireless phone charging.

Equinox Offers Up to 1,798 Litres of Cargo Space

The Equinox provides up to 1,798 L of maximum cargo volume with the rear seat folded. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat gives owners additional flexibility, while hidden storage beneath the rear cargo floor provides a useful place to keep smaller items out of sight.

An available AutoSense Power Liftgate can open automatically when the key fob is detected behind the vehicle, making loading easier when carrying bags or equipment.

Safety Technology Is Extensive in Both SUVs

The 2027 Equinox includes more than 15 standard safety and driver assistance features, such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam.

The next-generation Terrain also includes more than 15 standard safety features, including Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking, Reverse Automatic Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Braking and Blind Zone Steering Assist.

Equinox or Terrain: Which Compact SUV Fits Your Needs?

The 2027 Chevrolet Equinox makes sense for buyers who want a versatile compact SUV with a straightforward range, generous cargo room and the ability to choose between conventional LT, sporty RS and rugged-looking ACTIV models.

The GMC Terrain provides many of the same core benefits but puts greater emphasis on cabin technology and more specialized upper trims. Its 15-inch display is significantly larger, AT4 offers additional off-road hardware and Denali brings a more premium character.
